DDMA Kma reviews monsoon damages

DIMAPUR: The quarterly meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kohima, was held on September 25 at the Deputy Commissioner’s office under the chairmanship of DC and DDMA Kohima chairman, B. Henok Buchem. The meeting reviewed the post-monsoon disaster situation, including damages to roads and infrastructure, relief measures, preparedness and departmental response, a DIPR report stated.
On road damages, PWD (R&B) officials informed that estimates and repair proposals have been submitted to the State Government and concerned Central Ministries for approval. Bituminous work was expected to begin after the monsoon from Jotsoma Bypass to Lerie Gate. Road damages were reported at Jotsoma Bypass, the Kigwema–Chakhabama stretch, and a 100-metre section near Zaru Bridge, for which repair proposals are awaiting approval. Regarding the sinking portion of the road at Phesama along the National Highway, NHIDCL work was scheduled to commence from Monday, with the stretch expected to be motorable by late November.
Traffic Police officials highlighted that the sinking of T. Khel Model Road has worsened congestion in Kohima town, while potholes at several locations and the road near the BSF camp maintained by NHIDCL were also flagged for improvement.
The Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department reported six cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) under disaster-related circumstances, noting that the affected cases lacked insurance coverage. Officials informed that ASF vaccines are under trial and stressed the need for awareness on insurance verification through photographs.
The Forest Department cautioned that wild elephant movement in the district could not be ruled out, while wild boar menace affecting farmers in Kidima village was also discussed.
Home Guards & Civil Defence officials informed that training had been conducted and personnel were prepared to respond during disasters, with emphasis on readiness for fire-related emergencies during the dry season. Matters relating to SDRF relief were also reviewed.
The PHED reported disruption in piped water distribution at Aradura water tank, while the Power Department was requested to address complaints concerning the high-tension line at Jakhama under the Transmission and Generation Division.
The meeting also discussed updating the District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP) and the India Disaster Resource Network (IDRN), with concerned departments directed to take necessary follow-up action.
