Apart from maintaining law and order in the state, Nagaland police personnel has displayed their aptitude to engage in constructive discussion by engaging in a robust debate on the topic, “Naga customary practices and traditions in tune with the changing times” on Friday at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex, Chümoukedima.
The 14th Nagaland Police state level debate competition was organised by Nagaland Police under the aegis of National Human Rights, New Delhi, witnessing an impressive deliberation among 15 participants from four ranges – Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung and Tuensang.
The team “For the Motion”, comprising of seven participants opened the debate emphasising on basic customary practices which has governed, sustained and continued even today. And overtime with modernization, westernization and Christianity some of the customary practises that have been somehow diluted and reduced to an extent, yet many customary practices are still practised and have been evolving with time.
Most debaters emphasised on the annual tribal festival where culture and traditions have been given importance to preserve and protect. The debaters also dwelt on the fusion of traditional attires, folk songs and celebrations of Hornbill Festival.
Putting across the argument “For the Motion” maintained that Naga customary law have been implemented till date. “Against the Motion” team pointed out the prejudice against women in Naga society, which they argued was deeply rooted in aged old customs and traditional practices of the Nagas. The debaters also pointed out the absence of decision making bodes, especially in the customary court stating it as main indicators of patriarchy system that still exists in the society.
After a sizzling debate, Havildar Hipadlak of DEF, Phek and WPC Holika K Achumi of DEF Kohima representing the “Against the Motion” bagged first and second position while Athiubo Zeliang (UBSI) from CP Dimapur representing the “Against the Motion” and LDA Lezote-u of 5th NAP Bn representing the “For the Motion” bagged the third positions.
DEF Kohima was declared the best range and walked away with the trophy. Certificates of participation were also given to all the debaters.
The panel of judges were DIGP (BORDER) Nagaland, Dimapur, Videlalie Zashumo, DCP (Zone-II) Dimapur, Aotula Imchen and EAC Chümoukedima, Thejavizo Nakro. The chief host of the event was IGP (NPTO) Nagaland Kohima, Imlisunep, speaker was RO, 15th NAP (IR) BN. Mahila, Chümoukedima, Gloria Patton (ABSI), welcome and keynote address was delivered by DIG (CID/HR &SJ) Kohima, Imcharenla.
Later, vote of thanks was delivered by SSP (HR &SJ) Kohima, Soyimna Aier Koza.
