DIMAPUR, MAY 30 (NPN): Dimapur Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union (DENSU) has demanded a fast-track trial and strict legal action in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl in Dimapur, while urging authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and protection of the victim.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, DENSU president Thongule Sangtam said the union was deeply concerned by the case and would closely monitor its progress to ensure justice is delivered.
According to Sangtam, the minor had been staying with the family of the accused, identified as Watimeren Jamir alias O. Wati, for educational purposes. He alleged that the victim was subjected to prolonged abuse while under the care of the accused and further claimed that an associate of the accused was also involved in acts of harassment and intimidation.
The case came to light after school authorities and the Child Protection Committee observed significant changes in the minor’s behaviour and intervened. Following counselling sessions, the victim disclosed the alleged abuse, leading to the involvement of Childline authorities.
Sangtam said the child was rescued on May 23, 2026 and placed under the care of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Following a formal complaint, police registered an FIR under relevant provisions of law and initiated an investigation.
He confirmed that the accused had been arrested after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected.
Demanding a fast-track trial, Sangtam called for a comprehensive investigation into the role of all persons allegedly involved and urged authorities to ensure there were no procedural lapses.
He also stressed the need to safeguard the victim throughout the legal process.
Referring to reports of an accomplice, Sangtam said one additional individual had been identified based on the victim’s statement and other verified information. He urged law enforcement agencies to expedite efforts to apprehend all those involved.
DENSU vice president I. Chejing Chang said the union would oppose any attempt to compromise or suppress the case, while speaker Yongyo appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of abuse.
DENSU general secretary Sheren Shiu described the case as deeply disturbing and called for transparency, accountability and strict adherence to due process. She said the union would continue to pursue the matter until justice is served and all those responsible are brought before the law.
