DES celebrates 13th national statistics day

The 13th National Statistics Day was celebrated on June 29 under the theme “Sustainable development goals (SDGs)” organised by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) Kohima. 

According to DIPR report, National Statistics Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis who was an Indian Bengali scientist and applied statistician and is considered as the father of modern statistics in India. 
Y. Sacheo Ovung, director, spoke on the theme at the event and called upon his colleagues and staff to examine to what extend the prevailing statistical system in the state caters to the need for rational monitoring of the sustainable development goals indicators to achieve the goals set globally. 
He further added that the 2030 agenda for “Sustainable Development” are a set of 17 goals aimed at achieving a better world by 2030 and was first adopted on 25th September 2015 by 193 countries at the 70th summit of United Nations. He encouraged all his staff in the department to reassess the existing set-up of collecting and analyzing data and plan a road map containing the actions to be initiated in providing a robust statistics to the various stakeholders implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. 
The programme was chaired by Theyieneinuo Belho, deputy director DES. R. Kronu, additional director DES in his keynote address explained about the significance of the day and shared in detail about the life and works of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.  Asangyim & co presented a special number while P. Singson, joint director DES pronounced the vote of thanks.
