Around 104 students of Diphupar Government High School (DGHS) had reportedly appeared for the HSLC exams, 2016 without a Mathematics teacher since September 2015.
Addressing a press conference at DGHS premises here on Wednesday, Diphupar Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) president Sakulemba Jamir expressed dismay that the Class X students of DGHS had to end academic session without having Maths classes.
The lone Maths teacher was transferred by the authorities but no replacement was sent, they said.
Highlighting various problems faced by the students of DGHS, Sakulemba said the students have been deprived of quality education at a time when the government of India was implementing Right to Education (RTE) scheme for imparting quality education to the students throughout the country. DNSU president informed that the DGHS students had even launched agitation last year in protest against education department’s failure to appoint Maths teacher.
However, the students called off the stir following the intervention of the district administration and district education officer (DEO) with an assurance that the matter would be looked into at the earliest.
But, even after seven months, there was no Maths teacher in the school, he alleged.
DNSU president further pointed out that several representations were submitted to the DoSE from students and school management for appointment of Maths teacher in the school, but the department every time turned a blind eye to their appeals. He said the students were now disappointed at the attitude of the government.
Sakulemba said the school authority has somehow managed to conduct Maths classes by giving extra burden to science teacher to take Maths classes. However, he said it was not a permanent solution and just a temporary measure.
DNSU further cautioned to impose drastic action instead of making an appeal up till next week if the authority fails to look into the demand at an earliest.
Meanwhile, DNSU along with the school authority, Diphuphar Village Council (DVC) and Diphuphar Mothers Organization (DMO) have demanded the DoSE to appoint two Maths teachers immediately.
Sharing grievances on behalf of the teachers, DGHS English teachers said the lack of teacher not only hampered the students directly but also the teaching staff of other subjects indirectly.
“We cannot compromise the lives of the students since they are the future of the nation and therefore the authorities have to look into the matter seriously,” asserted the teacher.
