Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma on Saturday called upon students to imbibe positive values rooted in Naga customs and traditions while embracing new opportunities and technological advancements. He was speaking at the 19th Freshers’-cum-Annual Day programme of Unity College.
Addressing the gathering, Sharma emphasized that “good things last forever and must continue,” and described education as a lifelong experience aimed not merely at success but at becoming better human beings. “The ultimate aim of education is an embodiment of good virtues and values in life,” he stated.
Drawing from his travel experiences, the DGP noted that while differences exist across societies, basic values serve as a unifying force. He asserted that diversity is a strength and encouraged students to cultivate a culture of inquiry. “Asking questions is not a sign of ignorance but a mark of leadership,” he said, urging teachers to foster such an environment.
On the issue of unemployment, Sharma cautioned against producing graduates without viable opportunities. He encouraged youth to explore entrepreneurship and income-generating ventures, even while studying. “Why wait for graduation to earn?” he asked, advocating for early engagement in productive work.
He also stressed the importance of embracing Artificial Intelligence and adapting to change, while advising students to be discerning about which changes to accept.
Concluding his address, Sharma spoke strongly against drug abuse, describing it as a menace corroding society. He urged students to act responsibly and intervene when peers are involved. “You are an enemy to your friend if you don’t inform their parents,” he said.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Assistant Professor Avitav Gupta, with invocation by Youth Pastor Imilmenba Jamir of Police Baptist Church, Chümoukedima. Principal Dr. Lichumo Enie delivered the welcome address.
Highlights included a special number by Tsurikhumla Y, traditional display by students, speech on behalf of seniors by Nukshilemla Lemtur, speech on behalf of freshers by Rohtsupli Sangtam, and vote of thanks by Sumitra Chettri.
