Several areas across Nagaland continue to face unabated heavy intermittent rainfall in the past several days with Dimapur experiencing one of its worst inundation in recent times where vast swathes of the city brought normal life to standstill and forcing the closure of several schools.
Among the worst-hit areas included – Burma Camp, Super Market, Vilhume colony, Half Nagarjan, Netaji colony, River Belt colony, and parts of Borlingri areas etc.
Several homes, schools, shops, and roads were inundated, disrupting normal life and prompting urgent calls for intervention.
Schools located in low lying areas were forced to suspend classes, as floodwaters inundated school premises, posing safety risks for students and staff. Teachers reported flooded classrooms and blocked access roads that prompted closures.
Even by Tuesday, major roads as those in Half Nagarjan remained submerged under two to three feet of water that led to severe traffic disruptions. Commuters had to wade through knee-deep water, while shops in Super Market remained shut as water seeped into basements and storage units.
According to residents and officials, Dimapur’s overburdened and poorly maintained drainage system-particularly those affected by encroachment- were unable to cope with the volume of rainfall. Overflowing streams have further aggravated the flood situation across several colonies while the Dhansiri river flows at high level.
Residents at Netaji Colony told Nagaland Post that the current flood was the worst in recent years, with many families forced to remain wake through the night to monitor rising water levels. In Burma Camp, River Belt Colony and Half Nagarjan, many families shifted furniture and belongings to higher ground, with some families evacuating to relatives’ homes in safer locations.
Power supply was disrupted in most of the affected areas after transformers were submerged. Officials from the Power department said restoration work has been delayed due to safety concerns and ongoing rain.
DDMA, NSDMA issue alerts: The Dimapur District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issued public advisories, warning residents to stay away from waterlogged roads and riverbanks. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) confirmed that Dimapur has recorded above-normal rainfall over the past several days, contributing to the flood-like conditions.
Inundation not only disrupted life but also claimed three lives on Sunday due to electrocution.
Residents and local leaders have appealed for relief camps, emergency supplies, drinking water, medical care, and urgent drainage improvement works.
With more rain forecast in the coming days, authorities remain on high alert. Public have been asked to report emergencies to disaster response teams and to exercise caution, particularly around flooded streets and live electrical lines.
