Dimapur police collected a fine of Rs. 21,91,300 from traffic violators in Dimapur, Chümoukedima, and Niuland districts from January-December 2023. In an exclusive interview with Nagaland Post, Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, informed that the fines were imposed for various traffic offenses including lack of proper documentation, over-speeding, failure to wear seatbelts and helmets, parking violations, etc. He said that the collected amount had been deposited into the government treasury.
Asked whether any accident cases were reported during the festive season, Dimapur police chief said that heightened patrolling efforts and strict measures implemented to address over-speeding, drunk driving, and rash driving resulted in only one minor accident reported on December 24 near Patkai Bridge.
CP said that traffic personnel along with Dimapur police patrolling parties from December 20 onwards were stationed at strategic locations to check over speeding, drunk driving and rash driving.
In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion, the CP informed that traffic personnel have initiated enforcement of parallel parking at designated strategic locations.
Asked about the implementation of speed limits, the CP informed that a speed limit of 50 km/h was enforced between National Highway and Patkai Bridge and 30 km/h in the town area throughout December 2023.
With the aim to enhance road safety and raise awareness among vehicle drivers, solar-powered traffic blinkers and traffic signages have been installed at accident-prone areas and speeding zones in and around Dimapur, he added. CP attributed the success of maintaining road safety to media’s involvement in creating awareness.
