Dimapur police to crackdown on traffic violators

To ensure protection of motorists and pedestrians, Dimapur traffic police have declared that there would be a zero-tolerance for violation of traffic laws and warned that defaulters would be strictly penalised.


In view of the road accidents due to over speeding, the Dimapur police have set maximum speed limit for all types of motor vehicles along the following routes: 50 Km/hr— from Zion Hospital Junction to Chümoukedima; 50 Km/hr from Chathe Bridge (Patkai/Seithekema) towards Niuland district; 30 Km/hr — within Dimapur city area. Dimapur police informed that the speed limits would be enforced for a period of one month with effect from December 1-31, 2023. Police reminded that driving at excessive speeds was a punishable offence and would be strictly enforced U/S 183 of the MV Act.


In another traffic advisory, commissioner of police Dimapur Kevithuto Sophie informed all motorists to drive their vehicles within the prescribed speed limits.
Stating that wearing of seatbelts in a vehicle was mandatory, the police stated that driving/carrying passengers without seatbelt or driving a vehicle with a child below 14 years of age without safety belt or child restraint system was an offence.


For two-wheelers, police said driving without a protective head gear/using non-ISI graded helmets/not fastening chin straps were all violations of traffic laws.
Police advised the motorists not to use mobile phones while driving. It stated that using handheld communication devices while driving was dangerous and was punishable.


Advisory: Besides, Dimapur traffic police have also issued following advisories:
1) Do not drink alcohol and drive. Avoid the use of intoxicants while driving.
2) Shopkeepers/business owners are advised not to occupy the parking space of shoppers along the NL Road, Circular Road, MP Road and GS Road for the entire day.
3) Drivers should park their vehicles responsibly at designated parking spots. Do not stop/park at ‘no parking zones’. Vehicles shall be towed if not parked properly.


4) Only parallel parking will be allowed from Purana Bazar to Churnoukedima, so as to ensure the free flow of traffic. Angular/haphazardly parked vehicles shall be towed away.
5) All vehicles, in particular two wheelers/three wheelers, shall observe lane/ line discipline and shall not overtake other vehicles lined-up in the existing lane while waiting at traffic stops leading to multiple lanes; to avoid choking the traffic at the intersections. Defaulters shall be penalized.


6) Unauthorized retro fitments on vehicles are not permitted. Action shall be taken against defaulters for instating after-market devices such as, tinted glasses (with VLT of front and rear windshield being less than 70% and that of side windows being less than 50%); bull bars/ crash guards; beacon lights or red/blue LED fights and exhaust pipes/pressure horns.


7) All unregistered vehicles plying without a temporary permit issued by the concerned transport authority, shall be impounded and defaulters booked.
Police informed that above mentioned advisory would come into force with immediate effect. It urged the public to obey all traffic rules and regulations.
