Despite ongoing efforts by the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) to address the city’s garbage disposal issues, lack of public cooperation, particularly from the local business community has created hindrance to the efforts.
Huge piles of garbage can be seen accumulated along roadsides, particularly on Nyamo Lotha Road, Murgipatti, Midland and Marwaripatti. The ‘contributors’ were business owners and nearby residents some of who were discarding wastes on the streets in the evenings, especially on Sundays when many businesses clean their premises.
Lack of civic sense among public of Dimapur not only affects and creates an unwholesome sight but also tarnishes the city’s image. A resident of Midland told this Reporter that the DMC ought to come down heavily on those found littering. He also suggested that larger garbage or trash bins be placed in high-traffic business areas.
It may be reminded that garbage disposal issue has plagued Dimapur for years, and time has come for the public to realize they ultimately decide how Dimapur can be. Disposing of waste everywhere poses not only an environmental threat but also a serious health hazard.
