A team of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) in coordination with Mon district administration and stakeholders have begun the dismantling work at decades-old Mon-Namtola bridge between Mon and Charaideo district, Assam on February 1 to build a new baily bridge. DC Mon has already issued a travel advisory that till the completion of new bailey bridge, all the small, medium and all kind of passenger vehicle would ply an alternate route via Namtola Charali (Assam)-Lahdoigarh-Jaboka-Pentom Junction (Tizit/Mon).
It was informed that the entire process of launching of new bailey bridge to replace the existing old bridge between was targeted to be completed in four months tentatively by May 31, 2024. Further, it was also informed that existing Mon-Namtola road, which is lifeline for Mon district in terms of public transport and interstate connectivity, is under special maintenance and repair by NHIDCL. The works at new bailey bridge would include construction of new abutments (foundations) as the existing abutments are not strong enough to carry the weight of new Bailey Bridge. It was informed that entire process would take about four months’ time.
The district administration has appealed to the general public, civil societies, transport unions, industrial units, vehicle owners and other stakeholders to extend necessary support and cooperation while using the alternate route and strictly abide by tonnage capacity of the Bridge for safe and secure movement of all kind of traffic movement during the mentioned period. The launching of a new Bailey Bridge is also being implemented and executed by NHIDCL team in continuation of the ongoing special maintenance and repair work of road stretch as per official entrustment.
