IMPHAL, AUG 13 (NPN): Manipur on Thursday observed Patriots’ Day in honour of the heroes of the Anglo‑Manipur War of 1891, with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla calling for unity and harmony.
The day commemorates Crown Prince Bir Tikendrajit Singh and Thangal General, who were publicly hanged by the British on August 13, 1891, at Pheijaleitong, now Bir Tikendrajit Park.
The observance began with floral tributes at Hicham Yaicham Pat, Thangal Temple, and the statue of Thangal General. In the afternoon, the Governor and chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh led dignitaries in paying homage at Uttara Shanglen, Kangla Fort, followed by tributes at Shaheed Minar, BT Park. A guard of honour and gun salute were accorded by contingents of the Manipur Rifles.
Addressing the gathering, Bhalla said Patriots’ Day was not merely remembrance but an occasion to draw strength from the sacrifices of those who defended Manipur’s sovereignty. He stressed that diversity must remain a source of strength, not division, and urged youth to carry forward the legacy of the patriots through unity, education, and constructive action.
“Their courage showed that true bravery lies not in the certainty of victory but in standing firmly for what is right,” he said, adding that the best tribute to the patriots was to build a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious Manipur.
Chief minister Singh recalled the sacrifices of the patriots, saying their dedication continues to inspire the people. He urged citizens to preserve Manipur’s history and heritage while working collectively for peace and progress.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Gallantry and Outstanding Devotion to Duty were announced.
Patriots’ Day was also observed at district headquarters across the state, including General Thangal Ecological Park, Senapati, where leaders of the Naga Peoples Organisation, Poumai Naga Union, and Thangal Union paid tributes. The day was further marked at various places outside the state, including New Delhi.
