District Level Coordination Committee (DLCC) under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) convened a meeting at the DC’s Conference Hall, Zunheboto on July 2.
According to DIPR report, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner Zunheboto, Dharam Raj, who spoke about recent seizures of illegal liquor, drugs, and tobacco products in the district. He urged Zunheboto Town Council to carry out awareness drives and take strict action against illegal vendors in residential areas.
He also stressed the importance of geo-tagging and mapping all licensed shops in the town. Highlighting that selling tobacco is not a crime unless it occurs within 100 yards of an educational institution, the DC recommended that tobacco sale permissions should not be given to pharmacies, bakeries, grocery shops, toy shops and stationery stores.
He further directed that inspections be conducted every fortnight and that shops should display signboards regarding tobacco sale regulations.
District Nodal Officer, NTCP, Dr. K. Rosy Yhome, gave a report on NTCP and NTCC activities in Zunheboto since 2019 and highlighted COTPA provisions. She also shared efforts to declare institutions, villages, health centres and homes as tobacco-free.
Several schools were awarded for achieving tobacco-free status, including Cedar School (Aghunato Town), Bright Wave School (Tokiye Town), GMS Tokiye Village, GHS Satami Village, GMS Shevishe Village and GMS Keltomi Village.
