DMC directs meat vendors to maintain hygiene

DIMAPUR, MAY 8 (NPN): Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has directed all butchers and meat vendors dealing in chicken, mutton, beef, pork, fish and other meat products to strictly follow food safety and hygiene standards.
In a press release, DMC chief executive officer Thungchanbemo Tungoe said the directive was issued following several complaints regarding unhygienic handling and sale of meat within municipal limits. DMC has directed that all meat products must be handled, stored, displayed and sold in a clean and sanitary manner in accordance with food safety norms and public health regulations.
Vendors have also been directed to maintain cleanliness of their stalls, equipment, surroundings and waste disposal areas at all times. Further, DMC ordered that meat and related products be sold only within allotted market spaces, licensed stalls or designated locations approved by the council. DMC has strictly prohibited selling, displaying or conducting business on roadsides, footpaths or any unauthorized locations.
The council cautioned that any vendor found violating its directions would be liable for penal action, including immediate removal/eviction of the unauthorized setup without further notice, besides other actions under relevant municipal and public health laws. DMC has urged all responsible to comply strictly with the order in the interest of public health and sanitation.
