As part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2025 campaign, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) and Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) organised dedicated health camps—Safai Mitra Suraksha Shivir—for sanitation workers in their respective jurisdictions.
In Dimapur, the camp was held on September 30 at the old DMC office, Khermahal Road, organised by the DMC Sanitation Department in collaboration with the District Health Department (DHD). Addressing the gathering, DMC chairman Hukheto Yepthomi emphasized the importance of safeguarding the health of sanitation workers and urged them to utilise the medical services provided.
DMC Councillor in-charge of sanitation, Achum Jami, delivered the welcome address and thanked DHD for its support. He assured that such camps would be held annually and informed that the facility was extended to family members of sanitation workers. As part of the programme, awards were presented to “Best Sanitation Workers” in recognition of their service.
Speaking on behalf of DHD, Dr Benchilo commended DMC’s initiative and proposed biannual health check-ups for sanitation staff. The camp included free medical consultations, medicine distribution, and X-ray screenings conducted by the TB department under the Chief Medical Officer’s office.
Meanwhile, KMC organised a similar camp on September 29 at Kohima, in collaboration with the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare, William J. Clinton Foundation, UPHC Sekhazou, D Khel, and DAPCU under NSACS. A total of 104 Safai Mitras availed services including general health check-ups, Hepatitis B vaccination, chest X-rays, TB screening, HIV and syphilis testing.
Recognising sanitation workers as “frontline warriors” in maintaining public health and hygiene, the initiative aimed to provide essential healthcare services to those who manage the city’s waste infrastructure.
Speaking at the camp, Thenusou Sekhose, Sanitation & Water Supply convenor, KMC, stated that the programme was a vital step in safeguarding the health of sanitation workers who operate under challenging conditions. “By providing proactive health check-ups and awareness, we are not only looking after our personnel but also strengthening the foundation of our entire sanitation system,” she said. KMC extended gratitude to all partner organisations for their support in making the camp a success. The council reaffirmed its commitment to improving the working conditions and welfare of sanitation staff as the SHS campaign approaches its culmination on October 2.
