DMC launches bulk waste survey

DIMAPUR, JUL 27 (NPN): Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has issued a public notice informing all establishments qualifying as Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) to identify themselves and cooperate with officials during a city-wide identification and verification exercise.
DMC chief executive officer Dr. Kuzonyi Wideo said the exercise is being conducted in accordance with Section 3(i) of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, to ensure scientific solid waste management within the DMC jurisdiction.
According to the notification, an establishment will be classified as a Bulk Waste Generator if it has a floor area of 20,000 square metres or more, consumes 40,000 litres or more of water per day, or generates 100 kg or more of solid waste daily.
The notice covers institutional users, including Central and State government departments, local bodies, PSUs, private companies, educational institutions with over 300 students and community places.
Commercial establishments covered include railway stations, bus stations, airports, industrial units, shopping malls, cinema halls, hotels with more than 20 rooms, hospitals and nursing homes with over 30 beds, hostels, wholesale markets, stadiums, sports complexes, community halls, convention centres, auditoriums, marriage and banquet halls, conference centres, exhibition grounds, tourist destinations and tourist facilities with seating capacities exceeding 300 persons.
Residential apartments, housing colonies and residential complexes comprising more than 50 dwelling units or families have also been included under the BWG category. DMC directed all eligible establishments to voluntarily identify themselves, cooperate with officials during inspection and verification, provide accurate information on the nature of the establishment, number of occupants or users, water consumption, estimated daily waste generation and existing waste management practices, and produce relevant documents if required.
The council informed that officials conducting the survey would carry valid DMC-issued identification cards.
It stated that the survey aims to facilitate compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules and assist DMC in planning efficient waste collection, transportation, processing and scientific disposal services for Bulk Waste Generators.
DMC cautioned that failure to cooperate, concealment of information or non-compliance with the applicable provisions of the Solid Waste Management Rules may invite action under relevant laws and municipal regulations. It advised establishments to contact the Sanitation Branch, DMC, during office hours for any clarification.
