As part of its effort to make Dimapur Municipal Council area ‘dust bin free zone’, Pro Rural Dimapur based NGO in collaboration with DMC launched “Project garbage to gold” on Saturday at River Belt Colony Dimapur. Launching the project, DMC distributed 50 kitchen waste bins for household waste composing to residents of River Belt colony at a brief programme held at the community hall. According to DMC liaison officer, Ganesh Kumar, River Belt colony has been given the first opportunity for emerging as the winner of the ‘Cleanest colony competition 2017’. He said that remainig colonies would also be covered in the coming days. On December 4, 2017 DMC administrator Moa Sangtam has announced to launch a project to convert household and kitchen waste into manure from January 2018.
The Pro Rural explained that to turn the garbage into useful product, the biodegradable waste has to be separated in a container provided by the DMC and Pro Rural, sprinkle the powder provided and cover the container with a plank of wood to help retain moisture and heat.
Every few days, the biodegradable waste can be piled in the container, added with the powder and continue this procedure, explained the Pro Rural team.
The water accumulated in the container by the waste can be use for watering plants, cleaning drains and kitchen sink while the waste can be used for garden manure.
It may be noted that the DMC had also imparted training to the residents especially to the women folk on how to use the kitchen waste dustbins.
