DMC, NMBOA clear drainage

Continuing its effort to keep the city clean, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) along with New Market Business Owners Association (NMBOA) cleared the major drainages at New Market area, Sunday.
New Market had been experiencing water-logging and flood and with the onset of rainy season, the area has been a concern to businessmen and general public.
Lack of proper drainage system and with drainages from Church Road, Dhobinala, GS Road and MP Road flowing into the New Market drainage, it becomes over-loaded causing flood during the rainy season, observed Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) president Hokivi Chishi.
Rampant dumping of garbage and waste into the drain leading to clogging and over-flowing of drains is a major problem that has been confronting the people, he added.
During the inspection and clearing of drainage led by DMC administrator Atokhe Aye, it was observed that illegal constructions of foot-paths and toilets were made above the drainage obstructing the free flow of the drainage.
While appealing the people to have civic sense, DCCI president Hokivi Chishi warned that it would take strict actions if anyone was found throwing garbage and waste into the drain. He also warned residents of the area against open defecation and channeling of toilet directly into the drains.
He also appealed DMC to look into illegal constructions in New Market area on priority basis.
