DMC organizes awareness programme on dengue control

With the numbers of dengue outbreak mounting in Dimapur district alone, Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) jointly with the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme (NVBDCP) organised an awareness programme on dengue control for the colony chairmen and GBs under DMC on November 19, at its office premises.
At the programme, District Vector Borne Officer (DVBO) Dr. Moa, asserted that the number of dengue case this year has been alarming with 106 positive cases out of the 573 samples till date while last year only 20 cases were detected.  Talking about the breeds of dengue, he said that dengue does not start from drainage but it breeds in man-made containers and in small collection of water.
He also mentioned that dengue should not cause death-if prevented-but occured only in severe cases and the rumours on dengue death cannot be confirmed without ELISA test which was available only at district hospital Dimapur. Dr. Moa informed the gathering that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has approved the authenticity of Dengue cases only through ELISA test. The department with the district administration and Rotary Club Dimapur has been conducting fogging drive for the last one month.
Meanwhile, Urban Vector Borne Disease Scheme assistant director Kikolul, reiterated that fogging was not the solution to totally control Dengue outbreak thereby he called for joint efforts of every household for total sanitation.
He maintained that department has distributed 1 lakh 45 thousand larvivorous fish for controlling breeding of mosquito. However with the dengue outbreak mounting, the department with the district administration and Rotary Club Dimapur targets to conduct intensive fogging in all Dimapur towns by November 28, he informed.
Earlier, DMC administrator H. Atokhe Aye urged on the colony councils of Dimapur to initiate intensive cleanliness drive at their respective colonies to control the outbreak. He also appealed colony members to take the move to prevent the outbreak and stop the cycle of transmission.
