DIMAPUR: On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week 2026 commencing from August 1 to August 7, the District Health Society observed the event at District Hospital Dimapur on August 1.
Paediatrician, Dr. Obed Sema, sensitised mothers and caregivers on the importance of breastfeeding at District Hospital, Dimapur. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Obed stressed that exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months is essential for a child’s healthy growth and survival.
He urged mothers to initiate breastfeeding within 1 hour of birth so that newborns receive colostrum, which acts as the baby’s first vaccine. Dr. Obed also explained that breastmilk provides complete nutrition and supports brain development. It also helps build the baby’s immunity and lowers the risk of infections, diarrhoea and respiratory illnesses. At the same time, breastfeeding strengthens the bond between mother and child. For mothers, he added, breastfeeding aids faster recovery of the uterus after delivery, reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and supports natural birth spacing. It is also cost-effective and saves time for families.
Dr. Obed further encouraged mothers to continue breastfeeding along with complementary foods up to 2 years of age or beyond. He appealed to families, health workers and the community to create a supportive environment for breastfeeding mothers at home, in workplaces and in public places.
During the week-long observation, health facilities under CMO Dimapur will be conducting similar awareness talks in their respective jurisdictions to promote and support breastfeeding as a key part of maternal and child health services in the district.
