Absence of adequate number of dustbins have turned many areas of the city into virtual garbage dumping grounds, creating a multitude of environmental and health issues. Despite efforts by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) to collect garbage around the city on regular basis, several locations like Midland, Nyamo Lotha Road, Signal Basti and Marwaripatti areas have turned into garbage dumping grounds.
The DMC reportedly collects garbage from commercial areas on regular basis in the morning, but shop owners and nearby residents are seen throwing piles of garbage on road side, showing how absence of civic sense among the people is contributing to the mess.
Addressing the issue would require concerted efforts by municipal authorities by implementing strict rules and regulations vis-à-vis disposing of garbage, issuing mandatory orders to keep dustbins by every business owners, continue regular waste collection and educate the public on responsible waste disposal practices.
The citizens also required to be sensitised about garbage disposal, while community involvement was required, along with strict enforcement by colony chairman, GBs, student and youth organisations.
Only through fostering a culture of responsibility and respect for public spaces by all sections of society, along with investing in these solutions, would transform the city from being a dumping ground into a cleaner and healthier city, leading to a liveable environment.
