Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has asked the district administration and responsible authorities take “swift and decisive action” against one Nirmal Jain, who it accused of being a “habitual offender”.
DNCU president Hinoto P. Awomi and general secretary Michael Kath, alleged that Jain was “persistently” involved in criminal activities, including the benami system and fuel adulteration cases in the past.
They both expressed concern over “prolonged inaction” and lack of transparent findings regarding the investigation into Jain’s “extensive criminal involvement.”
DNSU has therefore, served a 15-day ultimatum on the authorities to award “justifiable punishment” to Nirmal Jain and cautioned that failure to do so within the stipulated period, would compel it to take its “own course of action to ensure justice prevails.”
DNSU also recalled that it had submitted a detailed presentation demanding a serious probe into his illicit activities, particularly his “continuous evasion of justice despite a well-known history of criminal offenses.”
DNSU demanded that the administrators present their fact findings to the public. The student body alleged that Nirmal Jain, despite being a “habitual offender”, consistently managed to evade accountability, which it said “casts a serious doubt on the integrity of our administrative and governing systems.”
Further, the union alleged that Jain’s “continued involvement in fraudulent activities”, including the acquisition of indigenous certificates and properties through illicit means, posed a direct threat to the land and identity of the indigenous people of Nagaland.
DNSU has demanded “immediate cessation” of his fraudulently possessed indigenous certificates and properties.
Stating that public was keenly awaiting justice for the indigenous people of Nagaland, the union said failure to deliver justice would “mark one of the darkest chapters in the history of Dimapur.”
It said that any attempt to delay the investigation on the pretext of ‘fact-finding’ or to ‘cool down’ the issue would only aggravate public sentiment. It warned the responsible authorities “must be prepared for a potential public uproar.”
DNSU said that Jain’s “past pattern” of absconding from Dimapur only to return when cases were perceived to have “cooled down” would not be tolerated this time. “No matter what manipulative tactics he employs, the DNSU will ensure he does not get scot-free. Justice must be served to the people,” the union asserted.
