Following the expiry of its 15-day ultimatum served on the district administration and responsible authorities to “swift and decisive action” against one Nirmal Jain, whom it accused of being a “habitual offender”, the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) on Friday announced that “concrete measures” would be initiated against Jain.
Addressing a press conference at DNSU office, the union’s general secretary Michael Kath said the ultimatum, issued on July 14, had lapsed without any tangible action from the authorities. He alleged that Jain had briefly left the state on health grounds soon after the ultimatum. However, Kath said the authorities issued what the he described as “mere shockwave notices.”
“Enough is enough. We cannot remain silent any longer. The public and student community must be prepared as DNSU intensifies its stand on the matter,” Kath averred.
Asked to elaborate on the “concrete action”, DNSU president Hinoto P. Aomi said the union had held several rounds of meetings and was prepared to take action. “We cannot tell you in the media what course we are going to take. But we assure you that the matter will be brought transparently to the public domain,” he stated.
Questioning the authenticity of Jain’s indigenous certificate, Aomi alleged that the document was “fake.” “We already have proof and evidence. The administration must investigate his criminal activities. It is Nirmal who must answer to the government, the administration, and the Naga people,” he said and warned of “unimaginable consequences” if the authorities failed to act.
DNSU leaders accused Jain of attempting to manipulate public opinion and even offering money to union members, which they claimed to have rejected. They asserted that the matter was not a personal issue but one of safeguarding the rights of the indigenous people under Article 371(A).
Backing DNSU’s stand, several other student unions in Dimapur also extended their support.
Chakhesang Students’ Union Dimapur (CSUD) president, Asü Ringa, described it as a “pressing issue” linked to the community’s cultural and land rights. “This person has been maligning and misusing practices related to ownership of land. We want to question the district administration and the government as to why proper action has not been taken,” he said and stressed that Article 371(A) must be protected.
Rengma Students’ Union Dimapur (RSUD) president, Khiti Kath, also voiced support and urged the government to take the matter seriously and “resolve it at the earliest.”
Ao Students’ Union Dimapur (ASUD) president, Imnatemsu Pongen, lamented the prolonged silence from the authorities despite repeated meetings and representations. “It has been more than two months, and still no clarification has come from the administration. The person involved is already in hiding, and it is very sad that the government is not taking this issue seriously,” he said.
The unions reiterated that if the government and district administration failed to act, the student community would be compelled to take its own course of action.
