Dog vaccination, registration camps underway in Kohima

The Veterinary Cell of the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has organized a dog registration drive & anti-rabies vaccination for Kohima municipal council wards which began at the KMC’s office complex, Super Market Kohima on Wednesday.

The program will continue till May 16 covering all 19 wards under the KMC.

At the spot, KMC office secretary, Zakiekhotuo Kiso said that this program was organized to spread awareness among the public because there have been dog bite cases within the KMC jurisdiction. He remarked that owning a dog is not only a privilege it is also a responsibility. Kiso observed that in the olden days, Nagas reared dogs for food but now that has changed and there are many dog lovers among the Nagas. He said that the KMC has started a dog census within the KMC jurisdiction since September 2017. KMC veterinary executive officer, Dr. Ketholenuo Metha said dogs are vaccinated so that even if they bite someone, no diseases are carried across. According to her, on May 1 ward numbers 3, 4, 5 & 6 were covered. May 2 will cover wards 17 and 18 in a camp at lower Agri Panchayat Hall. Department of AH & Veterinary Services veterinary assistant surgeon, Dr. Vilie Modoze and other two veterinary field assistants are also part of the program.

A minimal fee is charged for the vaccination, certificate and dog tag. It will be easier to reunite lost dogs that have the KMC tags with their owners.
