DoH&FW warns against injectable use of cosmetics, misleading claims

DIMAPUR, MAY 18 (NPN): Directorate of Health & Family Welfare (DoH&FW) has cautioned the public and aesthetic professionals against misuse of cosmetic products, particularly use of cosmetics through injectable preparations, stating that such practices violated provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and Cosmetics Rules, 2020.
In a public notice controlling and licensing authority, L Martemjen Longkumer, stated that cosmetics were defined as products intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled or sprayed on the human body for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness or altering appearance.
The notice clarified that products supplied in injectable form did not fall under the definition of cosmetics and no cosmetic was permitted to be used through injections by consumers, professionals or aesthetic clinics. Further, the authority stated that cosmetics were intended only for external application and cannot be used for treatment purposes by professionals or individuals. DoH&FW also warned against the use of prohibited ingredients, misleading claims on labels and tampering with inscriptions or markings made by manufacturers on cosmetic containers or packaging.
According to the notice, a list of generally not recognised as safe (GNRAS) and restricted ingredients has been published by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
The authority has, therefore, cautioned that use of prohibited ingredients, misleading claims, treatment-related usage and injectable application of cosmetics attracted violations under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and related rules. The authority has encouraged the public to report such violations to the regulatory authority through the email cosmetics@cdsco.nic.in or to the state licensing authority.
