Dr. Jamir urges reform at DGC event

DIMAPUR

Former Chief Minister of Nagaland and former Governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Odisha, Dr. S.C. Jamir greeted Dimapur Government College on its 59th Foundation Day and called for deeper reflection on the college’s progress. Speaking at the Felicitation Programme held at the college auditorium on Friday, Dr. Jamir stressed that reputation was the institution’s greatest strength and urged it to continue enhancing its image built over the years.
He observed that passive learning had limited academic growth and emphasized the need for modern learning tools and integration of technology in education. He encouraged teachers to adapt with the times and keep pace with global advancements.
Dr. Jamir called on the audience to focus on the present to shape a better future. He questioned the direction Nagaland was heading and said politics had stalled societal progress, pointing out that various “isms” were hampering unity. He said these must be removed for Nagaland to move forward.
He described Naga youth as capable and competitive, and urged them to embrace their identity as citizens of India and the world. He encouraged them to contribute to building a peaceful and inclusive Nagaland.
The programme honoured 12 University Toppers from various disciplines with citations and cash awards. Lanusunep Longchar received multiple awards, including the Academic Achiever’s Award and the Dr. Hokishe Sema Award for securing the top rank in Philosophy.
Other recipients included Rongsennungla received the L.T. Yepthomi Award for topping the Commerce stream with a university rank of 7th. In Economics, Kikati Yeptho was named department topper with a university rank of 3rd. Muskaan Rai, from the Education department, secured the 7th rank, while Tolino Yeptho stood out in English with a 7th position in the university rankings. The History department’s top performer was Mutsulu Venuh with a 6th rank.
Philosophy student Lanusunep Longchar, who was also awarded earlier in the programme, topped his department with the 1st university rank. Sociology’s highest achiever was Pulotoli N. Zhimo, who earned the 8th position.
Additional university rank holders included Sungitjungla (9th), Masemsangla (10th), Chiliam S. (5th), Tatongsola Longkumer (6th), and Tiamongba Lemtur (8th), all from the English and Economics departments.
Certificates of appreciation were also presented to graduating members of DGCSC, NCC (boys and girls), NSS, and students who excelled in sports, literary, performing and fine arts. The event was chaired by N. Sentinungla Pongen, HoD of Philosophy. Principal Dr. T. Tiakaba Jamir delivered the welcome address, followed by the college anthem led by NCC, invocation by Dr. Vivi Swu, and special music by Jatmei Wangsa. Awards were presented by Dr. Meripeni Ngullie, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Hare Krushna Parhi.
