Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, Dr Mukul Sangma has ruled out rejoining the Congress party, and described Congress as a party with a “dictatorial” central leadership.
Sangma’s statement is significant after his younger brother and former TMC legislator Zenith Sangma, Zenith’s wife Sadhiarani Sangma and other TMC legislators rejoined the grand-old party.
“I quit Congress because national parties have always tried to weaken the federal structure of the nation,” the former Chief Minister said, noting that he had taken conscious decision when he along with 11 other then Congress MLAs split the Congress and joined the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in November 2021.
“I have taken a very conscious decision, it is not that I have just jumped out not thinking what to do, not having a plan for future,” Mukul said.
The former Chief Minister recalled how the Congress high command disrespecting the sanctity of the Cabinet by dictating the fate of its members.
“Was I not forced to drop Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar from the Cabinet? Even the party president was being picked and replaced,” he said.
It is not that I nurtured bitterness, but if I share the truth, it may seem bitter. These are not things that happened overnight. I left Congress after a very conscious decision,” Mukul replied when a reporter asked if he considering of rejoining the Congress following his younger brother Zenith and others had returned to the grand-old party.
“Zenith may have thought his aspirations will be fulfilled if he shifts, but he may be wrong, I am telling you, he may be wrong and he will be wrong, I will prove it,” Mukul asserted.
Moreover, Mukul said that his public life is not a family monopoly while underlining that his work and dedication to public service will speak for itself
“Family remains family, but I want to tell you one thing… once I had decided to be in public life, I do not remain a monopoly of my family members alone,”
“I have a charted path for the state of Meghalaya, as someone who has had the privilege of serving the state and building it together with other leaders. I cherish that, and I still have time on my side. It is my binding responsibility to see that the state we have collectively built is protected from all perspectives, and that responsibility rests upon all the leaders,” Mukul, who had served as Chief Minister from 2010 to 2018, said.
