Dr. Sukhato A. Sema, MLA of 13 A/C Pughoboto and leader of the LJP Legislature Party, has written to the Union Minister for Food Processing Industries seeking enhanced Central funding of 80–90% for food processing projects in the North Eastern region.
In his appeal, Dr. Sukhato highlighted the unique developmental challenges faced by the region, especially Nagaland, and called for stronger financial assistance to help the food processing sector thrive.
He noted that most Northeastern States have limited revenue due to small tax bases and low industrial activity, making it difficult for state governments to contribute their share in major infrastructure projects.
He said the region suffers from poor connectivity and transport delays caused by mountainous terrain, further increasing costs and discouraging investment.
Dr. Sukhato pointed out that there was a severe shortage of facilities like cold storage, warehousing and modern processing units. This leads to high post-harvest losses, affecting farmer incomes and regional food security.
He mentioned that most food units in Nagaland operate at cottage or micro levels and remain largely unorganised. To formalise and upgrade these units, large investment in technology, training, and market access was necessary.
Highlighting the lack of access to credit and financial services for rural entrepreneurs, Dr. Sukhato said that government support was essential to minimise risks and make projects sustainable.
He also underscored the strategic importance of the Northeast, given its international borders and potential to contribute to national growth and integration. Dr. Sukhato urged the Centre to continue applying the Special Category State status, under which the region has historically received a 90% grant and 10% loan ratio in schemes.
He said increased Central funding would reduce wastage, boost employment, and support inclusive development in keeping with the government’s national vision.
Dr. Sukhato expressed hope that the Ministry would positively consider the request for the benefit of the region and its people.
