Drazic goal sees FC Goa ease past hapless SC Delhi to go top of ISL

FATORDA, FEB 26 (AGENCIES):

FC Goa secured a narrow 1-0 victory over SC Delhi at the Fatorda Stadium on Thursday, climbing to the top of the Indian Super League table, at least temporarily.
The decisive moment came late in the first half when Dejan Drazic, continuing his fine run of form, slid home a close-range finish from an Aakash Sangwan cross. Despite the breakthrough, Goa failed to fully capitalize on their dominance and missed the chance to extend their lead when Drazic blazed a penalty over the bar in the second half. The spot-kick was awarded after Brison Fernandes was brought down, but the forward’s effort summed up Goa’s lack of sharpness in the final third.
Statistically, Goa controlled the game, registering 13 shots and generating 1.54 expected goals (xG), yet only two attempts tested the Delhi goalkeeper. Their possession share of 58% reflected their superiority, but the inability to convert pressure into clear chances will frustrate head coach Manolo Marquez. Delhi, on the other hand, offered little resistance, managing just five shots with only one tame effort on target, rarely troubling Goa’s defense.
The result highlights Goa’s strength in controlling matches but also exposes their inefficiency in attack. While the three points push them to the summit of the table, four other unbeaten sides remain level on six points and are yet to play, meaning Goa’s position is far from secure. For Marquez, the win is welcome, but the lack of ruthlessness in front of goal remains a concern as the season progresses.
