Dimapur Sümi Totimi Hoho (DSTH) organized a seminar for Sümi female students’ Saturday at Town Hall, Dimapur where the students were exhorted by different speakers on various topics.
Speaking on the topic “responsibilities of educated women in present generation”, head of department, horticulture, SASRD Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, Professor Akali Sema encouraged educated women to restore the qualities of “our” forefathers.
Asserting that “our” forefathers were honest, sincere, courageous, hardworking etc. she asked whether the present generation has been able to inculcate those qualities and urged women to restore and preserve the same.
Encouraging women education, Akali said that education empowers women and that it becomes an instrument for her to bring positive changes in the society.
She also encouraged women to help in bringing down the corruption level in the society. Stating that God has gifted women with intuitive quality and the ability to think differently, Akali urged them to use it to their advantage.
Also speaking on the topic “breaking the silence”, general secretary for We For Women, Vikali V Chishi said that there should be a “zero tolerance” for violence against women.
Pointing out that many women are in pain but are silent, Chishi said it was time to break the silence and raise “our” voice.
She said all human beings are born free with equal dignity and rights and endowed with reason and conscience and that they should all act towards one another in spirit of brotherhood.
Chishi also highlighted various types of violence against women like dating violence, domestic and intimate partner violence, emotional abuse, same-sex relationship violence, sexual assault and abuse etc.
She said that, sometimes, women are attacked by strangers but most often are hurt by people close to them. Chishi said whether they are attacked by strangers or persons known to them, they should get help for any physical or emotional problems.
The seminar was chaired by Viholi V Zhimo and secretary by Khetoli G Sumi, invocation by Tovili A Zhimo, welcome address by Hokali V Chishi and special number by Zhukucho Sutsa.
Later, in second session, Kupukuni Women Society Purana Bazaar director Bokali Mughavi spoke on the topic, “Safeguarding women’s values”. The programme was attended by female students from various colleges in Dimapur.
