DUCCF flays vandalism; seeks crackdown on illegal bars

DIMAPUR, JUL 3 (NPN): Dimapur Urban Council Chairman Federation (DUCCF) has strongly condemned the recent incident involving alleged vandalism and illegal monetary demands at Prysm nightclub and called for strict enforcement of the rule of law, besides seeking action against illegal bars and nightclubs operating in Dimapur.
In a statement issued through its media cell, DUCCF said it had taken serious note of the incident involving NSF finance secretary Katho P. Awomi at Prysm, owned by Dimapur District Auto Drivers’ Union (DDADU) and Dimapur Restaurant Union (DRU) president Tito Yepthomi. It asserted that acts of vandalism, intimidation and lawlessness would not be tolerated, irrespective of the individual involved.
The federation questioned the district administration on how such outlets were allegedly allowed to sell alcohol openly and illegally and under what permits or licences such establishments were operating in Dimapur, describing it as an open defiance of the law and a mockery of law enforcement agencies.
Demanding immediate cancellation of licences of such bars and nightclubs, DUCCF alleged that these establishments had become a nightmare for peaceful residents and parents by disturbing the tranquility of many localities and endangering the lives of citizens. It also sought clarification from the issuing authority on the category of business under which such licences and permits were issued.
The federation further called upon churches and tribal bodies to inquire into the role of landlords and house owners accommodating such establishments and to reprimand their members. It maintained that unless Nagas collectively accepted responsibility and demanded accountability, the lives of future generations would remain at risk. DUCCF also questioned proprietors holding responsible positions in public offices for operating such “shameful and disgraceful establishments”, spoiling and endangering the lives of many youths. It also urged the Church to reprimand such activities without fear or partiality.
Appealing to business bodies, the federation urged them to remain neutral and impartial instead of favouring or opposing any individual, establishment or organisation, and to stand together for justice and the unity and integrity of society.
It also advised business chambers to remain vigilant against unions and associations allegedly involved in extortion, noting that they had consistently voiced concern over extortion and the mushrooming of unions and associations in Dimapur.
Describing itself as the apex body representing the urban colonies and wards of Dimapur, DUCCF strongly condemned any form of high-handedness, vandalism or extortion under the guise of social activism or leadership, stating that such incidents tarnished the commercial environment of Dimapur and disrupted peaceful coexistence.
The federation said it stood firmly against any individual, union, association, organisation or student body resorting to intimidation or demanding money from local businesses.
While appreciating ANCSU for distancing itself from its accused former leader, it maintained that the law must take its own course swiftly and impartially.
DUCCF further alleged that the unregulated growth of illegal bars, lounges and nightclubs operating in contravention of the law had contributed to social nuisances affecting youths and the security of residential colonies.
It urged the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, and the district administration to effectively crack down on illegal establishments while ensuring adequate protection for business owners against self-styled vigilantes or extortionists.
Reiterating that civil society and student organisations had the right to safeguard societal welfare, DUCCF stressed that no one was above the law. It appealed to all colony councils and youth wings under its jurisdiction to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement authorities in maintaining peace, security and civic discipline in Dimapur.
