DUCCF supports NBA demand for separate HC in Nagaland

DIMAPUR: The Dimapur Urban Council Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) has extended its full support to the demands raised by the Nagaland Bar Association (NBA) regarding the upgradation of the Guwahati High Court, Kohima Bench into a full-fledged High Court for Nagaland.
In a statement, DUCCF said the NBA had submitted a representation to the Government of Nagaland seeking a separate High Court for the state along with the appointment of an Advocate General from Nagaland’s own legal fraternity.
DUCCF stated that Nagaland became a state in 1963, while several states that achieved statehood later have already been granted separate High Courts. It pointed out that Manipur already has its own independent High Court and said Nagaland also has the legitimate right to demand the same.
The federation further said the Legislature, Judiciary and Executive are the three important pillars of governance and each must be supported with proper infrastructure and institutional facilities.
DUCCF also appealed to the state government to urgently improve the infrastructure of the District and Sessions Court in Dimapur. It stated that Dimapur, being the commercial and cosmopolitan hub of Nagaland, handles one of the highest numbers of legal cases in the state.
According to the federation, the present court infrastructure lacks several basic facilities, including ramps for differently-abled persons, proper toilet facilities for women, a dedicated Family Court within the same premises and adequate parking space. DUCCF noted that more than 580 advocates are registered under the Dimapur Bar Association and the number continues to increase every year, making better infrastructure necessary.
The federation urged the state government to address the issues at the earliest to ensure better justice delivery and greater public convenience.
