Nagaland governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi said that education is the most powerful tool that can be used to change the world.
Addressing the 4th convocation of National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland at Chümoukedima town council hall as chief guest on Monday, the governor congratulated the graduating students and asserted that the academic degrees that they have acquired should serve as a catalyst for pursuits of knowledge.
Prof. Mukhi said that change is constant and in order to keep with change, learning should not be seen as an end but as a means to achieve the greater heights in life. Mukhi encouraged the students to continuously update themselves with the latest technologies, innovations and the changes the world around was going through. Governor also encouraged them to be job creators and not job seekers.
“Go ahead with this degree, explore new fields, engage yourself in scientific and engineering research to serve mankind, to serve for our nation, be a teacher, start industries to provide employment opportunity,” he said.
Acknowledging the contribution of NIT, Mukhi said NIT Nagaland was the first Centrally funded technical institute of Nagaland and among 31 NITs of India. He said NIT Nagaland was a developing institution contributing significantly in various fields of engineering, technology, education and research. Governor also acknowledged the role of the government at the centre for the foresight and State of Nagaland and the Chumukedima community for their ceaseless support to the growth of NIT Nagaland.
Expressing concern over increase in violence against female in the country, governor, however, said there was no report on violence against female in Nagaland.
Quoting the words of Mahatma Gandhi “We can believe that we got absolute independence if and only if a lady can walk with gold in the streets even in mid night without any fear”, the governor said it was reality only in the state of Nagaland in the entire world.
He asked the students from other states to learn the philosophy of commitment to the wellbeing of the society and spread “these admirable qualities” of Nagaland to other parts of India. Then only the one of the prime objectives of creating NITs to promote cultural exchange will be fulfilled, Prof. Mukhi said.
Altogether, 44 were awarded PhD degreed, 76 postgraduate degrees and 102 graduate degrees among which, 20 PhD, 31 postgraduates and 102 graduates were awarded in person.
The convocation proceeding was chaired by Board of Governors (BoG) chairperson and director Dr. S. Venugopal.
NIT Nagaland currently offers six B.Tech., four M.Tech., M.Sc. in Physics and PhD programmes.
The event was attended by senate members, BoG members, parents and well-wishers. Special traditional song was performed by students of NIT Nagaland.
