EDYO presses state govt on waste disposal; flags public health risk

DIMAPUR, JUN 5 (NPN): East Dimapur Youth Organisation (EDYO) has appealed to the state government to urgently establish a designated dumping site and improve waste management services in East Dimapur, citing growing sanitation and public health concerns.
In a letter addressed to the advisor for urban development and municipal affairs, EDYO president Kanato and general secretary Chumbemo said the absence of a designated dumping site had led to the accumulation of household and solid waste across the area. The youth body stated that the situation has resulted in persistent foul odour, increased infestation of flies, rodents and other pests, and heightened health risks, particularly for children and the elderly.
Further, EDYO noted that the lack of proper waste disposal facilities has caused discomfort to residents, contributed to environmental degradation and adversely affected the overall quality of life in the locality.
According to EDYO, absence of a designated dumping site has forced residents to dispose of waste informally, exacerbating sanitation problems and posing risks to public health and environmental safety.
Therefore, EDYO has urged the responsible authorities to intervene immediately, identify and designate a suitable dumping site in or near East Dimapur, arrange for regular waste collection and transportation services, and implement long-term measures to ensure sustainable sanitation management.
Expressing hope for prompt action, EDYO said the issue required urgent attention as it directly affected the health, well-being and living conditions of residents across East Dimapur.
