
Parliamentary Secretary for Youth Resource and Sports, MTF and State Lottery, Khriehu Liezietsu on Saturday asserted that elderly people are asserts to the society and especially for the younger generation.
He was speaking at the 11th foundation day of “Friends of 80 plus” of Kohima Village, hosted by Kohima Village Council (KVC) at Tsiera Hall L Khel.
Stating that guidance and wisdom of the elderly people was needed in every sphere of life, Khriehu said “we” should continue to pray for them so that they could continue to guide the people.
Delivering a report on “Friends of 80 plus”, Vilakuolie Mere said it was a “network and fellowship” formed with a goal “to revive the culture of listening and be guided by the wisdom of the elderly people”.
He said that the objective was to document the stories and experiences of the 80 plus citizens, to reach out in friendship and fellowship through monthly home visits, to offer medical and other assistance to their needs and to give them psychological support which will enable to retain their self esteem and self respect as elders of the community.
The gathering was enthralled through folk song by Kiyaheü Tsikha and friends and Kethosilie.
Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Medoselhou Keretsu, invocation by Rev. Fr. Alex Vizo and vote of thanks was delivered by Shurho Solo.
Number of elderly people from each khel that attended the foundation day is 78 from L Khel, 37 from T Khel, 27 from D Khel and 25 from P Keel. The programme was followed by medical check up and treatment for 80 plus provided by Kohima Village Doctors’ Association.
