‘English Language Day’ observed at CAT

English Department at College of Arts and Technology (CAT), Nerhe Pheza, Kohima observed “English Language Day” with a workshop on the topic “English as a living language” at the college campus on Friday.

During the workshop, an English honors student of the college Roukuomenuo Mere shared about the life and works of William Shakespeare and that English language day coincided with his birthday.

While talking about the significance of the English Language, English department, assistant professor Sungjemmenla Longkumer said that it not only added a touch of convenience for communication but had been a gateway to art.

Further expounding that the English language was a blend of numerous languages and of so many cultures with shared histories, Sungjemmenla said that behind every English word, intonation or a sentence lay an intriguing story of exchange and migration making it a “living language”, which was constantly evolving.

During the workshop, English honors students enacted Shakespeare’s monologue from pastoral comedy “all the world’s a stage”.

Students and teachers of the college participated in reciting Shakespeare’s sonnets and also exchanged their favourite English words.
