As the second phase of the assembly polls in West Bengal approaches on April 29, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is taking significant steps to enhance the security and integrity of the electoral process. In response to voter intimidation incidents reported during the first phase, the ECI has ordered the installation of CCTV cameras at the approach roads to critical polling stations.
The ECI aims to implement a robust surveillance mechanism by placing CCTV coverage on the roads leading to sensitive polling booths. Previously, cameras were limited to the interiors of polling stations. Now, the monitoring will extend to the vicinity of sensitive locations, allowing for more comprehensive oversight of potential electoral malpractices.
Voter safety is a top priority for the ECI as they encourage citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote. The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has assured voters of their safety and has urged them to participate in large numbers, aiming for a voting rate exceeding 90% similar to the first phase. Restrictions will be placed on non-voters within a designated radius of polling locations, and all individuals carrying items for election officials will be thoroughly screened.
