DIMAPUR: Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Union Kohima (ENPUK) has condemned the attempted murder of Langshi Chang, son of late Daming Chang of Chendang Saddle Village, Tuensang district, at Chiechama Village, Kohima, on September 16, 2026.
In a press release, ENPUK president, N. Toshi Chang and joint secretary, Sepithrong citing preliminary reports, stated that the victim, who was working as a daily wage labourer at the Government Primary Health Centre (PHC) construction site, was shot with a .22 country made rifle by Medochulie Rurhie Zumvü, son of late Thebo Zumvü of Chiechama Village. Witnesses alleged that the accused had earlier thrown stones and blocks at the labourers and threatened them to stop working, before firing at the victim in broad daylight.
ENPUK termed the act “barbaric, inhuman and premeditated,” and said it was a direct challenge to the rule of law. It stressed that every labourer has the right to return home safely, and contractors and departments have a duty to ensure workplace safety against third party violence.
Highlighting that the victim is the sole breadwinner of his family, ENPUK said the incident has caused severe financial distress and long term livelihood loss. It appealed to law enforcing agencies and the State government to thoroughly investigate the case, book the accused under relevant sections for attempted murder, and ensure that bail is not granted.
The Union appreciated the swift action of the Chiechama Village Council, youth, and Nagaland Police in taking the accused into custody. It also lauded the principled stand of the village council in condemning the act of its own villager and declaring that no member should bail the accused.
Expressing solidarity with the victim’s family and the Chang community, ENPUK prayed for the speedy recovery of Langshi Chang.
