ENSF backs KSU over abandoned Noklak road projects

DIMAPUR, OCT 26 (NPN): Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has expressed full support for the demands raised by Khiamniungan Students’ Union (KSU), over the discontinuation of key road infrastructure projects in Noklak district and the reported return of funds without completion of the intended works.
In a press release, ENSF media cell expressed grave concern over revelations on the floor of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly regarding the projects, reportedly discontinued citing landowners’ demands for compensation.
The projects include the Chendang Saddle-Noklak-Pangsha Road Project (Phase-II) and the Noklak-Thonoknyu Road via Sanglao. The federation described them as essential lifelines for Noklak district and the wider Eastern Nagaland region, stating that their abandonment had serious implications for connectivity, economic activities, access to essential services and overall development.
ENSF said it had earlier approached the concerned Department of Public Works (Roads & Bridges), urging it to provide fair, proper and transparent information in response to queries and demands raised by KSU. However, the department’s failure to provide satisfactory clarification had hurt the sentiments of the people of Noklak district and the federation, it stated.
The federation termed the lack of a satisfactory response unacceptable and said affected communities deserved transparency, accountability and responsible governance.
It noted that the matter had been raised in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the State’s highest legislative forum, and said the issue should not be allowed to remain unresolved. ENSF stressed that the authorities had a responsibility to establish the facts, explain the circumstances and ensure appropriate corrective measures.
ENSF demanded that the department and the State government provide a clear and verifiable account of the circumstances leading to the discontinuation of the projects, the status and utilisation of sanctioned funds, the reasons for their return, and measures proposed to complete the intended road connectivity.
ENSF said the developmental concerns of Eastern Nagaland could not continue to be undermined by administrative indifference, inadequate communication or decisions that left critical infrastructure unfinished.
Warning that it was closely monitoring the matter, the federation said continued failure to provide a satisfactory and transparent response would leave it with no option but to initiate appropriate democratic and constitutional action. It affirmed that it would pursue the matter through all appropriate democratic means until accountability was established and corrective action taken.
ENSF called upon the department and the State government to ensure a transparent examination of the matter and take immediate steps towards resuming and completing the affected road projects, subject to necessary technical and administrative processes.
It maintained that public funds must serve their intended purpose and infrastructure projects must be implemented with accountability, adding that questions raised in the Assembly must lead to tangible action. The federation reiterated its support for KSU and the people of Noklak district in seeking transparency, accountability and equitable development across Eastern Nagaland.
