Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) has condemned the “barbaric assault, unlawful detention and extortion” inflicted upon two youths belonging to the Rengma community.
In a press release, ENSF president Nuheymong Yimkhiung and secretary general James Konyak stated that according to reports, the victims, engaged in the honest pursuit of their livelihood, were intercepted during their journey towards Imphal on the night of March 22 and early hours of March 23 within Kangpokpi district, Manipur.
They were forcibly taken to an undisclosed location and subjected to “intimidation, wrongful confinement and severe mental and physical distress”.
ENSF said that the victims were coerced under duress into surrendering an exorbitant sum of money. Describing the incident as a gross violation of fundamental human rights, the federation such acts of intimidation and exploitation were unacceptable in any civilized society.
The federation called upon the concerned authorities to initiate a thorough and impartial investigation, ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, and take measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
Eastern Naga Students’ Federation also expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of the people.
