NEW DELHI, JUN 9 (PTI): The environment ministry has proposed to amend the Ecomark Rules, 2024, which provide a framework for labelling eco-friendly household and consumer products.
The rules lay out the conditions, procedure, verification process and compliance mechanism for granting ecomark to products.
The amendments have been made to the rules’ first schedule, which lists a detailed criteria for 17 categories of products for awarding ecomark, according to the ministry’s notification published on Monday.
These products range from paints, cosmetics, batteries, edible oils, tea, coffee, toilet soaps to coir and paper.
One of the amendments has been made in the paper products category, which now includes an increased number of requirements for attaining ecomark.
For instance, handmade drawing paper must be acid-free (pH 7 or higher) for longevity and biodegradability.
The fire-extinguisher category has also been amended and one of the new requirements states that more than 90 per cent of the metal components used for containers shall be recycled.
Amendments have also been proposed for other product categories. These include paints, varnishes and powder coatings, batteries, wood and wood substitute products, and coir and coir products.
The environment ministry has invited comments from stakeholders for a period of 60 days.
