In preparation for World Environment Day on June 5, the Silviculture Division, Kohima, along with the Nature’s Club of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, hosted an environmental awareness program at the State Botanical Garden, Aradura Hill. The event focused on the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.”
State Silviculturist Dr. Prabhat Kumar delivered the keynote address, highlighting the importance of the Botanical Garden for plant conservation and environmental education. He emphasized how environmental health impacts society and urged people to take action against plastic pollution.
Dr. Kumar explained that plastic waste decomposes slowly, leading to water pollution, soil degradation, and harmful emissions when burned. He encouraged citizens to make small but meaningful efforts at home to reduce plastic use.
Nature’s Club Secretary from Kohima Science College also spoke at the event, detailing the club’s clean-up drives and eco-awareness campaigns. He stressed the importance of local responsibility in tackling the global plastic pollution crisis and advocated for biodegradable alternatives.
The event was chaired by Forest Ranger Florence and included an invocation by Forester-I Sunep L. Imsong, a vote of thanks by Ruguonuo, and a cleanliness drive around the Botanical Garden, reinforcing the message of collective action.
