Highlighting acute shortage of teachers at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Aghunato, the Eastern Sumi Students’ Union (ESSU) has served an ultimatum on the department of school education (DoSE) to deploy at least three graduate teachers to teach English and replace one graduate teacher Maths within 20 days.
In an ultimatum addressed to the principal director school education, the ESSU president Inito M Yepthomi and general secretary Tunavi G Assumi cautioned that the government’s failure to address its demands within stipulated time would force the union to take its own course of action.
ESSU stated that GHSS Aghunato, one of the oldest schools in Nagaland established in 1963, was in pathetic and deplorable condition.
The union pointed out that the school caters to the need of more than 50 villages under Aghunato ADC sub-division, but enrolment has declined due to poor quality of education and shortage of teachers.
ESSU stated that teachers in the higher secondary section comprised of five PGTs while in the high school section, there were only four GTs, one PT and one UGHT.
Further, the union said that the high school section was barely functioning without GT (English) since 2019.
ESSU stated that one graduate teacher (Maths) was deployed in the recent rationalization exercise. However, ESSU said health condition of the teacher did not permit him to conduct normal classes effectively. The union said students cannot depend on the service of the current teacher without his replacement or appointment of a new Maths teacher.
Further, the union appealed for appointment of one PGT economics before commencement of next academic session. ESSU also appealed for appointment of principal soon as principal was transferred in the earlier this year without a reliever.
