ETDC warns of possible halt in sanitation services

DIMAPUR, MAR 10 (NPN):

East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC) has cautioned the public that it could temporarily suspend sanitation fee collection and waste collection services if no alternative dumping site was provided after discontinuation of garbage dumping at Dimapur Municipal Council’s existing dumping site.
In a press release, EDTC pointed out that it currently did not have a designated dumping or disposal site for municipal solid waste, as mandated under the Municipal Guidelines and Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, which require every Urban Local Body to maintain its own authorized waste disposal facility.
EDTC warned that if the existing site was discontinued without an alternative arrangement, it would have no viable option for disposing of the waste collected within its jurisdiction.
In such a scenario, the council said it could have no choice but to temporarily halt sanitation fee collection and cease providing sanitation services to residents.
Further, ETDC noted that its sanitation vehicles were already operating under challenging conditions. In this regard, the council said transporting waste to distant locations would be neither practical nor feasible given the distance involved and the present state of the vehicles.
ETDC has, therefore, appealed to the responsible department to immediately examine the issue and arrange a suitable dumping site for EDTC at the earliest possible time to ensure uninterrupted sanitation services to the public.
Meanwhile, the council has sought cooperation of the general public and assured that it was committed to maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the area.
