Ex-minister Mavil Khieya passes away

Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Sharingain Longkumer, deputy chief minister Y. Patton and Ex-Parliamentarian’s Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN) in separate press statements, expressed condolences on the demise of former minister Mavil Khieya at Kohima on January 18.
Speaker: In a condolence message, NLA speaker Sharingain said late Mavil Khieya was first elected to the 7th NLA from the 14-Southern Angami-I Assembly Constituency on a Congress ticket and served as minister of Forest, Ecology, Environment & Wild Life Preservation, Publicity & Tourism and Geology and Mining. Late Khieya was reelected from the same constituency to the 9th House as an independent candidate during which, he stood out as the only one who refused to join the government.
Sharingain said as the lone independent, late Khieya’s stand was bold and principled that earned him great respect and admiration from legislators, state officials, media personnel and the general public alike.
He also said late Khieya’s dedication in upholding the principles of democracy and an unwavering commitment to serving the people will always be remembered. The Speaker offered condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the 14th NLA and on his own behalf and prayed for strength and solace during this time of grief and for the soul to rest in eternal peace.
Dy.CM: In his condolence message, deputy CM Y Patton described late Mavil as an exceptional leader whose voice resonated powerfully despite his relatively short tenure. He also recalled that Mavil was among the only seven candidates who successfully contested as Independents in the 1998 assembly elections, which were overwhelmingly won by Indian National Congress (INC). Patton stated that the Nagas and the Angami community had lost a great leader in Mavil’s passing.
On behalf of the state BJP legislators, Patton conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
Ex-PAN: Ex-Parliamentarian’s Association of Nagaland (Ex-PAN) expressed shocked and pained to learn about the sudden demise of one of its senior member and former minister, Mavil Khieya.
Ex-PAN president Joshua Sumi and general secretary Tarie Zeliang said that late Mavil, who had represented the Southern Angami-I assembly constituencyin the 7th and 9th House, was a member of the Ex-PAN since 2003.
During his association with Ex-PAN, late Mavil actively contributed through invaluable advice and support, making his demise a significant loss to the Ex-PAN family, they said.
Ex-PAN said late Mavil tirelessly worked for the welfare of the Naga people, particularly the Angamis and the people of Southern Angami-I.
Describing his passing as a loss not only for the Angami community but for all Nagas, Ex-PAN conveyed heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mrs. Avono, and the bereaved family. They prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the grieving family and wished for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace.
