Ex-MLA Bendangangshi passes away; NLA speaker, NPF mourn

Two-time member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), Bendangangshi Ao, passed away at Ungma village under Mokokchung district on December 27, 2024.


Ao was elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1964 under the banner of the Democratic Party of Nagaland (DPN) and was re-elected in 1969 under the United Front of Nagaland (UFN).


Sharingain Longkumer, Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Bendangangshi, a former Member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), who passed away on December 27, 2024, at Ungma Village.


In his condolence message, the Speaker highlighted Bendangangshi’s distinguished career as a two-time MLA, emphasizing his legacy as a scholar, patriot, and leader committed to the progress of Nagaland. Longkumer lauded Bendangangshi’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people, stating that his selfless contributions and sacrifices would forever remain a testament to his vision, courage, and commitment to the region’s development.


Speaking on behalf of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Longkumer extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for divine strength to help them endure the profound loss.


Meanwhile, Naga People’s Front (NPF) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Bendangangshi Ao, a prominent leader and former two-time MLA from Ungma village. NPF Press Bureau at the Central Headquarters, said late Bendangangshi is remembered as a stalwart figure who contributed significantly to Nagaland’s political and social fabric.


It highlighted Bendangangshi Ao’s political career, which began in 1964 when he was elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly under the Democratic Party of Nagaland (DPN). Later he was re-elected in 1969 under the United Front of Nagaland (UFN). The NPF noted his close collaboration with Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and praised his steadfast dedication to regionalism, which made him a symbol of hope for the Naga people.


NPF emphasized his lifelong commitment to the rights, unity, and aspirations of the Naga community. It said late Bendangangshi Ao was remembered as a voice of reason and courage who tirelessly worked for the Naga cause, leaving an indelible mark on the history of the region. His service was characterized by vision, integrity, and an unwavering sense of responsibility, it said.


The NPF extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for strength and solace during this difficult time. As they bid farewell to a leader of remarkable stature, the party expressed hope that his legacy of unity and dedication would inspire future generations. “May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the NPF concluded.
