Excise narcotics enforcement party manning Newfield check gate seized a cache of IMFL from a Manipur bound truck on May 26 at 3:40 p.m. and nabbed two persons on charges of transporting illegal liquor.
According to excise officials, the enforcement party led by AIE Nokcha intercepted a cement-laden truck (MN-04 A 7234) and on searching assorted IMFL including five cases of canned beer, two cases of Officers’ Choice whiskey and ten cases of 60 ml Kingfisher beer were found. The driver of the truck identified as one Zingshoran Tangkhul was taken into custody and has been charged under Sections of Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act 1989.
Excise department in its drive against illegal activities have been conducting a series of frisking of all vehicles crossing the check gate.
Officials in the department maintained that often a lot of trucks ferrying illegal liquor and other consignments pass undetected. They said since frisking vehicles creates traffic problems, it becomes difficult for the department to conduct thorough frisking on all trucks crossing the gates.
The officials also said that truck drivers blame the department as collecting taxes at check gates in order to remove those check gates so that they can ferry their goods without any hindrances. They also alleged that there were certain cases of trucks transporting illegal consignments taking advantage of escorts.
