Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo Monday claimed that the overall law and order situation in Dimapur was peaceful and under control over the past six month and that police have been putting “extra enforcement to control extortion and illegal taxation activities” under District Action Plan (DAP).
Releasing the half-yearly crime data (January 1 to June 3, 2022), CP said after the implementation of District Action Plan on September 16, 2021, extortion related cases have decreased.
Referring to removal of check gates and checking ILP, Tetseo maintained that the police were now not allowed to stop vehicles in check gates to check ILP unless specific information or instructions were received.
CP further revealed out of 735 cases registered across the State during the period, nearly 50%– 348 cases alone were registered under the commissionarate, which oversees three districts (Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima).
Tetseo further said that theft cases (137) topped the list of crimes registered, followed by violation of Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act (49), extortion (38) and under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (34).
With only one cases registered each, crimes under special and local laws, Information Technology Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Dacoity Act were the lowest.
He said out of the 137 registered theft cases, highest cases related to theft of two wheelers. He claimed that around 40% such cases had been solved and the vehicles returned to the owners. In this regard, he appealed all two-wheeler owners to take ownership of their recovered vehicles and park them in safe zones.
Speaking on traffic regulations, the CP urged all vehicle owners to have proper documentation of their vehicles, adding that if the police were to thoroughly check vehicles as per Motor Vehicles Act, there would hardly be any vehicles plying on the street.
He also appealed to all business establishments to install CCTV cameras outside their shops for their own safety and security, and also to help the police.
Meanwhile, PRO Dimapur police and DCP (Cimre) Bharat Laxman said altogether 83 cases were registered under NLTP Act, DC Act and NDPS Act, 102 arrests made and 71,929 bottles of various brands of IMFL, 2.55 kg brown sugar, 1,00,000 WY tablets, 695.5 kg of contraband ganja, etc, were seized between January 1 and June 3.
He disclosed that 58 cases were registered for extortion and under Arms Act, while 93 persons were arrested. He added that 27 arms, 1,130 rounds of ammunitions, one hand grenade and Rs 2,19,180 in cash were also seized. He mentioned that traffic police had also issued challans to 7,500 defaulters.
No arrest yet on hit-and-run case: Referring to the hit-and-run case in which a college student was injured and later succumbed to her injuries, PRO and DCP (Crime) Bharat Laxman said they were yet to identify the car or person/s involved in the incident due to lack of any eyewitness though several CCTV footages had been collected. He said investigation was still on in the case and appealed to individuals having any information to come forward with details to solve the case.
SIT probing murder case: In connection with the alleged murder case of a 37-year-old man from Assam, PRO said that a Special Investigating Team (SIT) was formed to probe and that five persons had been detained so far. PRO said that the incident took place on the intervening night of May 20-21.
According to reports, the victim identified as one Sunny Singh was reportedly assaulted by a group of youth at a party in Golaghat road, Dimapur. The youth from Assam was later found dead inside his hotel room. The body was taken to a nearby hospital and then later shifted to Civil Hospital for postmortem. A suo moto FIR was lodged at West Police station.
Claiming that the SIT was trying to gather more information on the case, he maintained that as the case was still under investigation, more details would be made know later.
