Fake Currency Kingpin Deported from UAE: A Major Win for CBI

In a significant move against cross-border crime, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully secured the deportation of Moideenabba Ummer Beary, a key accused in a high-profile fake currency case. Beary, who was wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), arrived in Mumbai on Friday, June 20, after being deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Flight AI-920 from Dubai.

The breakthrough came through the diligent efforts of the CBI’s International Police Cooperation Unit (IPCU), working in close coordination with the National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abu Dhabi and INTERPOL. They successfully tracked and geo-located Beary in the UAE, leading to his apprehension and subsequent deportation after extensive coordination through INTERPOL channels.

According to the CBI, a Red Notice was issued against Beary by INTERPOL on December 30, 2013, at the CBI’s request. This notice stemmed from a case registered by the NIA’s Kochi branch. Beary is accused of procuring high-quality Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) in Dubai and orchestrating their smuggling into India via Sharjah, with the ultimate destination being Bengaluru. He faces charges including counterfeiting, cheating, and criminal conspiracy.

Following his arrest in the UAE, Indian authorities formally submitted an extradition request through the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). INTERPOL Red Notices are crucial tools, circulated globally to law enforcement agencies for internationally wanted fugitives.

The CBI, as India’s designated National Central Bureau for INTERPOL, operates through its unit known as BHARATPOL, facilitating vital cooperation between Indian and global law enforcement agencies. This success is part of a broader trend, as the CBI has effectively coordinated the return of over 100 wanted criminals to India through INTERPOL mechanisms in recent years, highlighting its increasing prowess in combating transnational crime.
