Taking a serious note about Nagaland falling in Zone-5 of seismic vulnerability, which is considered as the most vulnerable as far as seismicity is concerned, a Familiarization Exercise on Earthquake safety got underway in Dimapur district from May 18, 2015.
In a press release, DPO (NSDMA),Rendemo Shitio stated that the exercise was being conducted by experts from 1st Battalion of the National Disaster Response Force based in Guwahati, Assam, under the command of Inspector Rajesh Ranjan and Sub-Inspector Kipgen of NDRF, in collaboration with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Dimapur, started on May 18 at St. John Higher Secondary School. Similar exercise was also conducted on May 20 at Holy Cross Higher Secondary School.
All together, six schools participated in the exercise from Dimapur Urban. The exercise covers a lecture session on Earthquake Safety, demonstration on Basic Life Support System and an Earthquake mock drill. Both Students and Teachers of the participating schools maintained that such exercise needs to be regularly conducted in all the schools at least once in a year as it gives them a hands-on experience on earthquake preparedness.
This exercise will also be conducted in other part of the district like Medziphema and Chumukedima in the following week.
NDRF community awareness prog
The National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF)1st Battalion, conducted a community awareness programme on school safety at Medziphema on May 21 at town hall initiated by District Administration SDO(C) Manpai phom who chaired the programme and also delivered a brief account on disaster management.
DPO (NSDMA), Rendemo shitio gave a lecture session on do’s and Don’ts’ s of earthquake while inspector Rajesh Ranja( 1st BN-NDRF)and SI.kipgen gave a demonstration on basic life support system, search and rescue, and equipment display.
The NDRF also conducted school safety earthquake mock drill. The gathering consisted of school students,village councils and locals.
